2009 Design Excellence Award

2009 Design Excellence AwardHighlander Construction & Development Presented with Design Excellence Award by the New River Valley Home Builder’s Association

The New River Valley Home Builder’s Association presented Highlander Construction & Development with the Design Excellence Award on February 27, 2010 at its annual Inaugural Gala which was held at Blacksburg Country Club.

The Design Excellence Award is voted on by the General Membership of the Association and is awarded to an active member who demonstrates design excellence for a project in the New River Valley. Highlander Construction & Development was nominated for the original design of two energy efficient, EarthCraft certified homes which the company built on Piedmont Street in Blacksburg as a part of a new infill subdivision call Piedmont Place.

The design of the environmentally friendly "green" homes incorporate Energy Star rated windows, doors, light fixtures, and appliances as well as recycled Cellulose insulation and advanced framing and air sealing techniques. The houses were designed to compliment the narrow lots of the infill subdivision while taking advantage of the beautiful views of downtown Blacksburg and the campus of Virginia Tech. The houses are "EarthCraft" certified meaning they meet or exceed the standards of the award winning green building program developed through a unique partnership with the housing industry, the environmental community, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Said company President James Oliver, "our team is honored to have received this recognition for the original design of the Earthcraft certified homes we constructed on Piedmont Street in Blacksburg. While the houses our team designed were not as big and glamorous as some of the others which were nominated the parameters which dictated the design were tough to negotiate and required a lot of experience and innovation. This award is a great compliment to the hard work and dedication of our design team and we are very appreciative of this special recognition."
